Robe à la Française in Blue and Cream Silk Damask, ca. 1770

Iconic Silhouette of 18th‑Century French Fashion

This rare Robe à la Française, dating to around 1770, represents one of the most iconic silhouettes of eighteenth‑century fashion. Made from luxurious blue‑and‑cream silk damask woven with motifs of flowering branches and ribbon patterns, the gown exemplifies the refined textile artistry of the Rococo period. Created in the characteristic French Sack‑Back style—distinct from the English Tight‑Back construction—the gown opens at the front and features elegantly shaped elbow‑length sleeves trimmed with self‑fabric borders and cream lace.

Bodice Construction and Interior Details

The bodice fastens with hooks and eyes, while decorative buttons—likely added or supplemented in the 19th century—adorn the exterior. Inside, the gown is lined with linen and includes an adjustable internal lacing system at the back. A small train extends behind the wearer, and discreet side slits provide access to the hanging pockets traditionally worn beneath such garments.

Skirt, Panniers, and Structural Elements

The matching petticoat, crafted from the same sumptuous silk damask, would originally have been worn over panniers (side hoops), creating the wide, dramatic silhouette typical of formal Rococo dress. The waistband is reinforced with brown linen, and parts of the interior are lined with soft pink silk, reflecting the high‑quality craftsmanship of the period.

Hand‑Stitching, Alterations & Condition

The gown is almost entirely hand‑stitched, though some 19th‑century alterations or restorations—likely done by machine—are visible. Three small holes have been carefully backed with matching fabric, making them invisible from the outside. Overall, the dress survives in very good condition, a remarkable example of historic silk garments from an English private collection.
